Why The iFactor was written?

PDF Print E-mail

Around 15 years ago I had a life-changing experience.

It was one of the worst experiences of my life. What that experience was you can read about in the book. The point I am would like to make is that, it gave me one of my most valuable lessons.

One night I became extremely emotional, a flashback of the incident had hit me hard. “Why, why, why?” I shouted – “Why did this happen to me?” It was at this low point in my life when the timeless words from a Buddhist proverb came to mind, “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.”

I sat back in my chair in a cold sweat from the emotion and anger I had just displayed. As I calmed down the following words also came to me, “Think not, why is this happening to me, think what is it about me.” I did not realise it back then, but I was about to turn my most distressing experience into my most valuable one.

I grabbed a pen and paper and wrote these words, “Real understanding is discovered not by the question - Why is this happening to me? It is revealed through the question - What is it about me?” At that moment, I concluded that for me to learn and grow from the experience, I had to stop blaming factors around me and start examining factors within me.

I had always known of the power of questioning - but I had never used the power of questions on myself. I was about to undergo a process of introspection, a journey I refer to now as ‘Personal Orienteering.’  This journey was not about anyone else but me, I had no where to look for answers but within myself, there was no ‘them’ to blame or consider, only ‘me’. The only thoughts, actions and beliefs that had to be considered, were mine. This enlightening process of asking myself questions and examining only my thoughts and actions took some time.

After a few days of this introspective process, I felt enlightened, invigorated and empowered. My journey inward had revealed to me some things about myself that I needed to change.  I began to revel in my new-found ability to critically self-reflect and decided to apply this process to many other areas of my personal and business life.

I started asking and answering questions about three areas of my life, ‘me, myself and I’ – the iFactor was born. It was a powerful and life changing experience.
